“All Roads Leading To The Douglas International Port of Entry: CANAMEX-East Corridor To Be Developed”

With an investment of 95 million pesos ($8.1 million dollars), the Governor Guillermo Padres has given the green light for the expansion and modernization of 84 miles of federal highway from Cananea, Sonora Mexico to Agua Prieta, Sonora Mexico.  The new 4 lane-divided highway is a commitment by the State of Sonora for the economic development of the region.

Accompanied by officials of the Mexican Federal Department of Communications and Transportation, Sonoran Governor Padres stated, “today we give the checkered flag on the 4 lane highway Imuris-Cananea, Cananea-Agua Prieta Agua Prieta, Janos…this is a dream come true for all people of the region."

The Mexican Federal Department of Communications and Transportation estimates that the investment will benefit over 1.2 million inhabitants within region.

Significant portions of the project will be completed by November 30, 2011.

The improvements to the Imuris-Cananea, Cananea-Agua Prieta highway represents the development of a significant corridor and recognizably the Eastern Passage of the CANAMEX Corridor

The CANAMEX Corridor is one of the first north-south corridors designated as a High Priority Corridor under the National Highway Systems Designation Act

“Overwhelming commercial traffic delays have plagued surrounding commercial port of entries with unreasonable crossing times and minimal personal contact with custom officials. This is not the case in Douglas”, stated Oscar Vildosola, Board Member of the Douglas International Port Authority and CEO of OSVIL International, “…getting a container across the border (Mexico to USA) takes upwards to 48 hours at major ports of entries like Nogales, AZ, El Paso, TX, Laredo, TX, etc. versus 30 min in Douglas”.

The Imuris-Cananea, Cananea-Agua Prieta highway will provide a viable trade corridor with significant cost savings (fuel, time, etc.) for companies and clients alike wishing to access the continental mid-west, southwest and west coast.

About The Douglas International Land Port of Entry

The Douglas/Agua Prieta port is a state of the art facility with the personnel, capacity and second to none customer service that can process commercial traffic for just in time operations.  Overwhelming commercial traffic delays have plagued surrounding commercial port of entries with unreasonable crossing times and minimal personal contact with custom officials. This is not the case in Douglas.  For example, on a typical peak season day, getting a container across the border (Mexico to USA) takes upwards to 48 hours at major ports of entry e.i. Nogales, AZ, El Paso, TX, Laredo, TX, etc. versus 45 min in Douglas. This represents significant cost savings (fuel, time, etc.) for companies and clients alike.  Additionally vehicular and pedestrian wait times are minimal, with a 20 minute wait time during peak hours.

Note: The U.S. General Services Administration has begun the project development and funding strategies to expand the Douglas International Port of Entry, which will result in more than doubling the throughput capacity for cargo truck, bus and personal vehicle traffic and ultimately
